The barfiest holiday of the year is upon us. I don’t see what the big deal is about Valentine’s day. Maybe I am bitter (probably) or unromantic (hardly. I’m actually a hopeless romantic), but there is something about getting chalky heart shaped candy that really turns me off.
is it love?
What’s love got to do with candy and flowers? Eat candy, want more, keep eating, gain weight. That doesn’t sound lovely to me. Flowers brings allergies and dried up leaves petals and stuff that falls off and makes a mess.
Isn’t Valentine’s day some sort of religious holiday anyway? Being Jewish, I’m pretty sure we don’t do the whole saint thing. Does it mean I am not loved if I don’t have a valentine? Eek! My head is spinning.
People scurry about trying to find the perfect gift for loved ones so that they don’t look like total jerks. Flowers, candy, perfume, lingerie, sappy greeting cards, stuffed animals and the like are snatched off store aisles. As a retailer, I get it. As a woman, I don’t understand.
brainwashing anyone?
Hey! It’s pop culture baby. Brainwashing may not actually be necessary. Who doesn’t love getting gifts? Give me gifts any day of the week and I become giddy with excitement. Present me with a stupid card or box of conversation hearts and I want to gag.
Back in my bridal days, there were two huge influxes of brides; Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Really?? How unoriginal! I guess it is romantic for some but I want to be swept off my feet just because it is Wednesday.
If love is not authentically in your heart, don’t bother. You aren’t fooling anyone but yourself. Tell me you love me because you do, not because someone on TV told you to. I don’t need flowers to get the point across.
back to the hopeless romantic part
Right now, you are probably thinking I am the meanest person ever. Really, I’m not mean so much as a realist. I believe in love and the power it can have over us.
i am lovable and deserving of love. I want to be loved and to love in return. It just doesn’t come with chocolate. It is more of a state of being.
what I think love is
- Love is doing something you don’t like just because it makes someone else happy.
- Love is accepting others for who they really are without trying to change them
- Love is thinking I am beautiful when my face is covered in green goo
- Love is laughing at somoeone’s silly jokes even though you’ve heard them a million times before.
- Love is accepting yourself with all your bumps and bruises.
- Love is kindness or being helpful without anyone asking it of you
- Love is striving to do good just because it is the right thing to do.
I’m sure there are lots of other things that denote love. How many can you think of that have nothing to do with crap you give or get on valentine’s day?
What is your opinion about love and Valentine’s day? Like me, do you find it utter bullshit or are you part of the machine? By the way, I like redhots way better than conversation hearts. They taste way better and don’t leave a chalky nasty taste in my mouth. Just sayin’
