When I think of previous jobs, my list is quite short.
- for my parent’s gift shop as a teenager
- china department in a department store
- again for my parents until I had Avery
- owned a bridal shop for a long long time
- went back to school (is that a job?)
- went back into retail management where I still am.
If you want more details you can always see my resume on LinkedIn. Overall, I’m lucky in that I do what I love and love what I do. Yeah, I know it sounds totally cliche but there it is.
a poopy job
If I search way way way waaaaaaay back into past memories, there were definitely jobs I did I didn’t. The pay was appalling and the hours were tedious…
Most of them involve poop.
If you haven’t guessed yet, my least favorite job was baby sitting. Don’t get me wrong, I love kids and had two of my own just to prove it.
boring boring boring
The idea of sitting hour after hour in someone’s home with nothing to do is not ideal. It was a time before cell phones, home computers and cable TV, and dinosaurs roamed the earth. too dramatic?
I felt it was my duty to entertain the kids while watching them. How many games of “duck duck goose” could I endure before running away screaming? The memory gives me shivers.
There were times I would show up with arts and craft projects for the kids to enjoy. It was cool because parents would be surprised by a masterpiece their little angels created. Whew. Shivering stopped for now.
For those late night occasions, I was always afraid the parents would come home and find me asleep and drooling on the sofa. Was it OK to sleep on the job? Would I get in trouble? Erff. That is me over thinking again.
the poopy part
Who enjoys changing diapers or cleaning up kids who pooped in their pants?? As a 12-year-old, even the thought of it made me gag. The reality was much worse.
Could a job be more disgusting? I’m sure permanent scarring exists somewhere. Hmmm…
Poopy pants changing wasn’t a preparation for motherhood as much as a deterrent. It is amazing I ever had kids at all. Fortunately it is different when I had to wipe my own child’s bottom as opposed to a non-relative.
recap time!
No social life, nothing to do and nowhere to go. Geez. It sounds so depressing. Food was always a problem as I disliked cooking even then.
Maybe I hate cooking because of the traumatic impact of having to provide meals for toddlers even though I was a child as well. I had a breakthrough here!
The best part of all was that I would spend all day alone babysitting for a whopping $1 per hour. Yep, it’s true.
On the drive home, I would take a crisp ten dollar bill into my palm and promptly turn around to spend on candy or lipgloss. Granted, $10 could get me further then than now, but it was still substandard wages.
your turn
When Avery babysat, she got paid a whole lot more than I did. How about you? Did you ever baby sit? At what age and what wage? (hey it rhymes!) If not, what was your least favorite job? Share your thoughts and stories.
This post is inspired by Mama Kat’s weekly writing prompt. As usual she is a well of inspiration. 2.) Your least favorite job you’ve ever had.
